SIGHTING OF THE MOON IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS

SIGHTING OF THE MOON IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS
Fiqh-us-Sunnah Vol.3
According to the majority of scholars, it does not matter if the new moon has been sighted in a different location. In other words, after the new moon is seen anywhere in the world, it becomes obligatory for all Muslims to begin fasting, as the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam, said: “Fast due to its sighting and break the fast due to its sighting”.
This hadith is a general address directed to the whole Muslim world that is, "if any one of you sees the moon in any place, then that will be a sighting for all of the people."

According to 'Ikrimah, al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, Salim, Ishaq, the correct opinion among the Hanafiyyah, and the chosen opinion among the Shaf'iyyah, every “country” (or territory) is to take into consideration its own sighting and not necessarily to follow the sighting of others.

This is based on what Kuraib said: “While I was in Ash-Sham, the new moon of Ramadan appeared on Thursday night. I returned to Madinah at the end of the month”. There, Ibn 'Abbas asked me: “When did you people see the new moon?' I said: “We saw it on Thursday night”.' He said: “Did you see it yourself?' I said: “Yes, the people saw it, and they and Mu’aawiyah fasted”. He said: “But we saw it on Friday night. We will not stop fasting until we complete thirty days or until we see the new moon”. I said: “Isn't Mu'aawiyyah's sighting and fasting sufficient for you?”  He said: “No . . . This is the order of the Messenger of Allah r.”

This is related by Ahmad, Muslim, and At-Tirmidhi.

About the hadith, At-Tirmidhi says: “It is Hassan Sahih Ghareeb”. Scholars act in accordance with this hadith. Every land has its sighting. In Fath Al-'Alam Sharh Buloogh al-Maraam, it is stated: The [opinion] closest [to the truth] is “that each land follows its sighting, as well as the areas that are connected to it."

Publicizing One's Sins

One should not publicize his/her sins the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said:

“ All of my Ummah would get pardoned for their sins except those who publicize (their sins); and from publicizing is that a man does an act ( of sins and disobedience) during the night, and enters upon morning having Allah veiled him, and says: “ O so and so I did such and such last night” And indeed he spent the night being veiled by his Lord and then spent morning raises Allah’s veil from himself”

The Etiquette of Fasting

It is recommended for the fasting person to abide by the following acts:

1.      Pre-dawn Meal

Anas narrated that the messenger of Allah (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said: “Have a pre-dawn meal for there is blessing in the pre-dawn meal.”1 This “pre-dawn” can be fulfilled simply by a sip of water. Abdullah ibn ‘Amr narrated that the Messenger (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said:, Have a pre-dawn meal even if it just be a sip of water.”2

It is also recommended to delay the eating of the pre-dawn meal. Anas narrated from Zayd ibn Thabit who said, “The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam)had a pre-dawn meal and then he went to the prayer. I (Anas) asked him, ‘What was the time between the call to prayer and the pre-dawn meal?’ He replied, About the time it takes to read fifty verse.’”3

If the person hears the call to prayer while his food or drink is already in his hand, he can eat or drink. Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said: “ If one of hears the call to prayer while his cup is in his hand, he should not put it down until he has satisfied his need from it.”4

2.      Refraining from vain speech foul language and other acts that do not befit the fast.

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said, “If it is a day in which one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relations and quarrelling. If anyone wants to pick a fight with him, he should say, I am fasting.”5  He also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said, “ For whoever does not give up false speech and acting by it Allah has no need for him to leave his food and drink.”6

3.      Generosity and Study the Quran

Ibn ‘Abbas said, The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) was the most generous of the people in doing well. He was most generous during Ramadan when he would meet with (the Angel) Gabriel. Gabriel would meet with him every night during Ramadan until the month finished. The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) would recite the Quran with him. When he would meet Gabriel, he was more generous in doing good than a beneficial fast wind.”7

4.      Hastening in Breaking the Fast

Sahl ibn S’ad narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said, “The people will continue to be in a state of goodness as long as they hasten in breaking their fast.”8

5.      Breaking the Fast with what is mentioned in the hadith if it is easy to do so.

Anas said, “ The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) would break his fast with ripe dates before praying. If not he would break his fast with dried dates. If that were not available he would drink some water.”9

“It is not required of the Muslim that he humiliate himself”

Imam Ahmad recorded that Hudhayfah said that the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said:

لاَ يَنْبَغِي لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يُذِلَّ نَفْسَهُ

“It is not required of the Muslim that he humiliate himself”

They said, “How does one humiliate himself?” He (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said:

يَتَعَرَّضُ مِنَ البَلاَءِ لِمَا لا يُطِيقُ

“He takes on trails that he is not capable of enduring”

Recorded by Ahmad 5:1405, this was also recorded by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah and At-Tirmidhi said, “This hadith is Hasan Sahih Gharib.” In Tuhfat Al-Ahwadhi 6:531, Ibn Majah 2:1332

Do Not Belittle Any Good Deed

Abu Dharr (radillahu’unhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) said to me, "Do not belittle any good deed, even your meeting with your brother (Muslim) with a cheerful face."

Holding Fast To the Qur’an and the Sunnah

Holding Fast To the Qur’an and the Sunnah

Chapter: What is said against judging (in religion) made on the basis of one’s own opinion or by Qiyas (without referring to the Quran and the Sunnah).

And the statement of Allah “And follow not (O man! i.e., say not, or do not. Or witness not) that of which you have no knowledge (e.g. one’s saying: I have seen” while in fact he has not seen, or “I have heard”, while he has not heard…” (V.17:36)

7307: Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr: I heard the Prophet say, “Allah will not deprive you of knowledge after he has given it to you, but it will be taken away through the death of the religious learned men with their knowledge. Then there will remain ignorant people who, when consulted, will give verdicts according to their opinions whereby they will mislead others and will go astray.”

Du'aa The Prophet Made after Every Salat

Du'aa The Prophet Made after Every Salat

7292: Narrated Warrad, the clerk of Al-Mughira: Mu’awiya wrote to Al-Mughira “Write to me what you heard from Allah’s Messenger.” So he (Al-Mughira) wrote to him: Allah’s Prophet used to say at the end of each Salat (prayer)

La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shai’in Qadir Allahumma la mani’a lima a’taita, wa la mu’tiya lima mana’ta, wa la yanfa dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd”

“None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, the Alone Who has no partner. His is the kingdom, and to Him praises must be, and He is Able to do everything. O Allah! Nobody can withhold what You give; and nobody can give what You withhold; and hard efforts by anyone for anything can not benefit one against Your Will, and Decisions”

He also wrote to him that the Prophet used to forbid

· Qil and Qal (sinful and useless talk, like backbitting or that you talk too much about others)

· Asking too many questions ( in disputed religious matters).

· Wasting one’s wealth (by extravagance)
